"It is the highest wisdom : strive for heavenly countries through contempt of the world",

argued Thomas a Kempis in his "Imitation of Christ". It was a warning to the rich to use the filthy lucre for higher means, as a way to heaven.

It is in that direction that St Nicholas's church points, the first parish church in the Netherlands with an emancipated urban architecture. A parish church with the airs of a cathedral, housing real treasures of religious art. The house of worship was repeatedly altered in the course of the building process. It was not finishing the works but keeping on building as such which became the goal, as it was a step ahead on the way to God.
